Throwback Thursday: Moriarty and Winston, A Tail of Two Corgis (Without Tails)

Sir Winston of Sussex was born on February 9, 2010 in Harrington, Delaware. “Looking back” he recalls, over a dish of his favorite vittles, “my young life was typical: playing, nomming, sleeping, nomming (I was always hungry — even then) and trips to the vet. Then one day, while I was sleeping, these two complete strangers came along, picked me up and took me home with them.”

“Nobody asked me about it. I suppose that’s just the way things are done.”

“Luckily, the joint I ended up at in Delaware was tailor made for a guy like me. The first few months flew by, and the cool new people Mike and Candace R. learned my ropes pretty quickly. (I’ve got to hand it to them). Of course, looking like THIS didn’t hurt. I mean, I’m not one to boast but … I am a Corgi. I hear the rumors. I see the internets. We are easy on the eyes. Reaaal easy.”

“Why anybody would want to mess with all this by mixing it with water and goop is way beyond me. And I’m smart! But you already knew that.”

“As a pup, naturally I was obligated to test the boundaries daily, carefully mapping out what I could get away with, and how to avoid capture. I’ll admit to a weakness for the humans’ socks. They call to me. Yes, it’s wrong. I know it’s wrong. But the urge — it overwhelms!”

“With each stolen sock, the chase would ensue. I learned the art of the duck and dodge by watching football games with the folks on Sundays. Just when I’d begun mapping the most effective escape routes through my kingdom, one day things changed. They started putting everything in boxes. Stuff was getting moved around. Life as I knew it was about to change drastically, and it was a real pain in the pants. Soon after that we moved to a new castle, and Daddy got ready to go away. Now he goes away a LOT.”

“When he starts putting things in huge bags — bags bigger than me — I know he’s going away. When I see those bags, I just lay down and sigh. The last time I saw him, he was holding me and crying. Mommy says he’s in Afghanistan, but I don’t know where that is. I only know it’s not home, here with us.”

“I hope he comes home soon, but I know he’s OK, because Mommy keeps smiling and tells me every night that Daddy loves me and misses me. I miss him too.”

“Thankfully, Mom and I don’t have to go it alone. We’ve got Moriarty!”

Professor Moriarty of Sussex was born on November 20, 2012 on a small farm in Maryland.

“I have no idea how they found me” Moriarty recalls. “I was just hanging out with my brothers, minding my own business, and these two humans kept staring at me. I have to admit though, I’m glad they picked me out.”

“I remember the first time I met Winston. At first he was cool. He kept trying to sniff me, which I wasn’t totally OK with, but I figured it might make him leave me alone. Little did I know it was on like Donkey Kong!”

“I don’t think Winston liked me very much at first. I always had to watch my back but I wasn’t about to take his flak! I never knew when he would start with the chase, but I was always ready! I think I eventually won him over. Now we’re starting to be friends.”

“For a while they were calling me all kinds of things. “Little Puppy, Puppy Head, Baby Corgi … I was getting confused! I just started running at whatever was called, whether it was me or not. It was all good. Then they started calling me Mori, and that stuck.”

“Yeah, I remember when Daddy left. I only got to know him for a few months, so I hope he comes back soon. Winston says he will, and Mommy tells us both every night that he loves us, so I know he’s out there somewhere. All of us are proud of him. Winston and me agree that Mommy is our rock. She loves us, and we love her. She’s always here for us when we need a pet or a hug. I think sometimes I give her too many kisses (is there such a thing?) but I can’t help it!””We have the best humans. I heard them say they couldn’t imagine their lives without their two best friends. And then I realized they were talking about us. I ask you, how lucky can two dogs GET?”
