Miss Dottie
1996 – 2010
Nancy E. of Oregon wrote to The Daily Corgi back in April about about Dottie, a fourteen year-old former AKC Champion Cardigan firmly entrenched as queen of the house.
This grand dame passed peacefully in June, a few months after her final win in the Veterans Class at the Chintimini AKC Dog Show.
“Dottie won, but she was also the only entry. I always feel the need to disclose that, lest people think a fourteen year-old Cardigan was still slaying the judges!”
Dottie was bred by owner/breeder Dana Wellock of Jefferson, Oregon. Miss Dots has offspring and siblings all over the Northwest and even the world (including Japan!)
“Dana lets her retired show dogs be adopted as family pets and is very strict as to who gets them. Dottie lived most of her retired life with Betty Freuchtel in Vancouver, Washington (http://dozerandcoop.blogspot.com/2008/09/dotties-visit-to-her-former-home.html).”
“Betty realized as she got older and into her 80’s that if she did not find another home for Dottie — that if she, Betty, got ill — Dottie would end up in a shelter or worse.”
“So Betty got the word out, I heard it and Dottie came home with us at the age of eleven. Betty passed away last year and we hope she knows her girl Dottie was well loved and well taken care of.”
“Even blind and mostly deaf, Dots had a wonderful life. She went to the beach and ran in the sand and she loved to sleep in the sun. She’d moan and roll on her back when she was feeling frisky, loved to have her ears scritched, and enjoyed eating apples off the ground. Through it all, she never forgot she was an AKC Champion show dog. ”
“The backyard was Dottie’s turf: she patrolled the perimeter like a master sergeant. Food was her favorite thing, followed by treats, followed by water, followed by carrots.”
“Dottie’s bad habits included — but weren’t limited to — eating the kitchen chairs (two had to be sent to the garbage dump), pulling the kitchen trash can down, eating half a bag of kibble (required vet visit, x-rays, etc.), and sleeping against the front door, making it impossible to open it and get inside.”
“Now we return her to Betty so she can sit by Betty’s feet and have treats fed to her and talk to her old friend about this and that. Thanks for visiting us Dots, we will always love you!”

Such a lovely tribute to Dottie! We loved it, every bit of it. What's a couple of old chairs compared to having that girl in your life….!
RIP Dottie

Thanks for the comments and compliments, but I have to say I just had really great material from Nancy to work with!
She's a great writer and supplied some truly memorable pics of dear old Dottie.
I usually cry all the way through crafting a memorial post, but Miss Dottie had such a long, fabulous life surrounded by love.

How precious. We felt that way about our old pemmie, CodyBear. He came to us at 13 and we had him almost two years before he went over The Bridge. Thank you for loving Dottie and may she find great love and comfort at Miss Betty's feet.
