David Z. and Patty G. share their home with more dogs and cats than they can count on one hand.
(One version of heaven!)
This is Crystal and Frodo, and their pal Cooper.
The Cardi Contingent!
“Crystal (Hylane’s Haunting Melody CGC RN), on the left, is a blue merle Cardigan (obviously). She has champions in her ancestry, but she had a couple of minor flaws – she’s too tiny, and her tail curls up just a bit too much.
We think that makes her a ‘pocket Corgi!’ We were delighted to take her in as an adult in February of 2010. Her brother is already a champion in conformation, and has his RA and is working toward his CD; her sister has her RA and CD already. Crystal is a bit behind in that she only started in tracking and passed her herding instinct test.
However, her BEST job so far is therapy pet work! In July of 2010 she started working as a therapy pet through Furry Friends Pet Assisted Therapy Services (www.furryfriends.org) and currently visits at a convalescent home; Ronald McDonald House; and with two reading programs, one at a local library and one at a school, where children read to pets for confidence-building and literacy development.
Her small size makes it very easy to pick her up to put on beds at the convalescent home, so she’s perfect for it! She seems to really enjoy it so far. In addition, she adores her ‘brother’ Frodo, and her five cat ‘siblings’ too!
Frodo (Ffallian’s Ring-Bearer RN) is on the right. He is a big boy, a black brindle and white Cardigan, with some black ticking on his face and feet. His father is a grand champion and has been one of the top Cardis in the country, Heart of Gold Power Play. Frodo came to us as a four month-old puppy, possible show stock but sold as a pet (and we were just fine with that).
He is too shy around strangers to do pet therapy work and hasn’t yet passed his CGC, but really enjoys Rally! He also has started tracking and seems to enjoy that too, although he’s slower and more thorough than his boisterous ‘sister’ Crystal.
Although shy of humans, his dog skills are excellent; he’s fantastic with other dogs. He also thinks that his cat ‘siblings’ are great pals, and until Crystal came into his life, his best buddy was Mokey the cat (who is also a working therapy pet and therefore was immensely tolerant of this dog dragging him
around). Now he and Crystal are the best of friends, and love to race around and wrestle!
He’s much more protective of the house, of us, and even of the cats than Crystal is. Both are fantastic dogs and have very different jobs!
Cooper is the brown brindle and white Cardigan owned by a friend of ours. He was already good pals with Frodo and Cooper, and when we dog-sat him for the weekend, this further cemented the friendship. Crystal was rather ambivalent about the stranger, at the time. He’s a very sweet dog who
could also be used for therapy pet work, if his owner was so inclined.
We love Pems, too, but we really love those Cardis!!”
