Keeping Up With Gillie of Texas!

Gillie of Texas made her debut on The Daily Corgi last year, as part of the “Faces of DM” series.  She’s a spunky, pretty-as-you-please Pembroke living out loud in spite of DM (degenerative myelopathy).
Gillie will turn 13 on August 13th and is working to make it to her birthday by exercising at her therapies and enjoying new treats.  As her Mom Peggy H. points out, treats are vital “because all work and no play makes Gillie a dull girl.”
“She still walks in a hydro treadmill twice a week. On Mondays she also does therapy with her physical therapists and has acupuncture with electrostim, plus chiropractic and massage with Dr. Karen Ave, DVM in Carrollton. Gillie really likes these because she gets soooooo many treats!”
 
“We can’t forget her doggie latte at the local Starbucks, because she sure won’t!”
“Gillie would say she doesn’t need all those treats to make her work, but … well, she’s lying. Gillie eats so many treats on Mondays that she’s heavier on Tuesdays and Wednesdays! She’s also especially sleepy on Tuesdays.”
“By Wednesday, Gillie is rested and ready to go out and meet her public. We visit hardware stores, Half-Price Books, pet stores, and anywhere we might meet people who will admire Gillie’s obvious good qualities. On Fridays it’s back in the tank and then out and about. How about a visit to Lucky Dog Barkery at Preston Center in Dallas?”
“And how about a weekend visit to Auntie Pat and the Border Collies? Gillie asks if we have to visit that rambunctious puppy Fionn too … well he lives there, so yes we do. He’s your best exercise all week!”

“It’s hot in North Texas (remember last year?) and extremes of temperature are very hard on DM dogs. She is rapidly losing the use of her front legs — her back legs are long gone — and her bark is already getting weaker. We don’t know how much longer we’ll have our Gillie, but we do know how to make her happy every day of the rest of her life.”

“To the dogs and people of Corgis on Wheels and DMDogs Yahoo groups, and especially to Bobbie Mayer who knows all and shares all, thanks for your love and good advice!”

“To the breeders making sure none of their dogs will ever again suffer this disease, and to Laurie here at The Daily Corgi for helping get the word out, God bless you!”

“To Dr. Julie Stanek and her team at Centerville Road Animal Clinic, Dr. Ave and Miss Karen, Jennie and Chantel of North Texas Animal Rehabilitation, and to Auntie Pat for all your help, thank you for Gillie’s last year. Without you we would not have had it.”

    She's my precious treasure and the best dog I've ever had. When she came to me she was shut down but now she smiles (and bosses) every day. It's easy to love Gillie!

    I hope those doggie latte from Starbucks do not contain any coffee or chocolate! Both can give dogs heart attacks. FYI
