Trude, Madly, Deeply!

Corgi Nation, meet the newest member of our family, Trude (pronounced Trudy). Or as we call her, Tru-deelicious.

In February this year, we lost our beloved 13-year-old Pembroke “Dodger” (see The Daily Corgi’s Dog of the Day post of Septmber 24, 2010). The outpouring of support we received at that time via The Daily Corgi and Facebook helped to heal our spirits and truly made us feel a part of Corgi Nation.

After nine months, the grief eased enough to begin looking for a new Corgi. We had decided months ago that we wanted a puppy from his wonderful breeder, Anne Bowes of Heronsway Corgis. While waiting for that blessed event, it occurred to us that life would be more fun with two Corgis, so we looked for a young adult who would be accepting of a puppy in a few months.

It seemed providential when we contacted nearby breeders Ann and Warren Phillips of Sunline Kennel and learned that they had a retired, nearly five-year-old female conformation champion who couldn’t be bred.  She had lost her only litter to Fading Puppy Syndrome, and they couldn’t bear the thought that she might have to go through that again. They wanted to find a placement for her where her gentle nature would be nurtured by a lot of attention and love. Her registered name is Am. Ch. Sunline Royal Trude. She instantly became Trude.

We welcomed Trude into our family on November 30, and we are head-over-heels for her already. She’s the gentlest Corgi, male or female, we’ve ever met. She is friendly and submissive and rarely barks; to recall a James Herriot story, we’ve heard only one “woof” in almost two weeks. We are told, however, that she is a champion squirrel chaser. And it turns out, in true Corgi fashion, she’s an expert eviscerator of stuffed squeaky toys.
Her big dark eyes are melting pools of love, and she smiles with her entire body. Her fluid ears go back, and she dances and wiggles with joy when Jim or I or Jim’s 16-year-old son James enters a room. And she would cuddle for hours. She just goes limp and begs for belly rubs.

I would love to do therapy work with Trude, but for now she’s working her therapy on us. We are so happy to have a Corgi for Christmas.

    So glad you and Trude found each other Susan, Her gentle nature is so evident and I wish I could give her some of the belly rubs that she loves. Since we're so far away, I'll just have to give them to Cowboy as her surrogate!

    Susan, you gave us so much love when we lost Jack Jack earlier this year. I am so happy to read that you have found such a sweetheart to come into your family. She is a beautiful girl!
