Emmy Lou is an adorable, sassy female who came to Corgi Connection of Kansas from a breeder out of Missouri. She was surrendered to
rescue, along with another pup who hadn’t sold.
rescue, along with another pup who hadn’t sold.
Emmy Lou needs to find her furr-ever home soon, as she is growing
up quickly and Kansas Corgi Connection Rescue’s Jeanette DeMars wants her adjustment to be as smooth a possible. “We think she’s about seven months old
(the breeder gave no information) will probably always be a smaller Corgi.”

Emmy was initially shy but no longer a shrinking violet. “She’s a petite
little girl at about 20 pounds, but she has these huge, endearing “polar
bear” paws. She’s not big on going for walks, but is content to just wander
around the yard. She’s friendly to everyone she meets and is pretty
adaptable to various situations. Emmy Lou is doing well with
house-training. We no longer crate her and she knows how to use a
doggy door.”

“She has an umbilical hernia that’s not causing any issues, and has recently been diagnosed with luxating patellas. This condition, which makes her back end loose, isn’t currently painful but will not improve, so surgery is a possibility down the road, should it become painful. In the meantime, she’s a regular pup with a little extra challenge which doesn’t seem to bother her.”
“She has been has spayed, micro-chipped, is current on her vaccinations, has been started in
heartworm preventative and gets flea/tick preventative as well as daily vitamins.”

“Emmy Lou would
probably also do best in a home with older children only. She doesn’t
seem to have must interest in cats and probably couldn’t catch one
anyway. Even if Emmy were
100% healthy (and none of her issues are life-threatening), she still is a pretty special little girl. She must have had
such a rough start in life, but her strong will to live shows her survivor’s spirit!”

Star’s Happy Ending Story (already adopted … just sharing the love!)
Corgi Connection of Kansas Rescue founder Jeanette DeMars says shelter dog Star came to her attention in the summer of 2011 through Lauranne Hess, one of her
volunteers in the Kansas City area. Seems Star had been adopted through the
same shelter over a year ago and was brought back. The people who
turned her in said they couldn’t get her house-trained, and at that time Star had no prospects of being adopted out again.

“We agreed to take Star and were mortified
when we got her” recalls Jeanette. “She weighed 56 pounds and had a urinary tract
infection. The infection was treated immediately and her foster
mom Sarah King began work on trimming this girl down.”

“We changed her diet and planned exercise. Owing to last summer’s excessive heat, however, Star’s activity had to be limited because of heat rash under her
front legs. Progress was slow, but pound by pound Star began to thin
down. In September, Star’s foster mom was busy preparing for a wedding, so Star came to live at the DeMars house with four other Corgis.”

“Star’s personality began to emerge as the
weight came off. She was quite hilarious. The looks she
could give said so much more than mere words. So often she wore a “Really … are you serious?” expression. Still, with all her progress there were no
applications to adopt her. It was impossible not to fall in love with
the girl and we were prepared to keep her.”

“Finally after nearly six months in foster,
there was an application from Jim L. and Michael C. But it
wasn’t for Star. The dog they were interested in had already been
adopted, so I told them about Star. They agreed to meet her, but
once I saw how cute their little Pembroke Belle was, I have to admit I was
skeptical they would want a Corgi like Star. She was big and a beautiful girl in her own right, but she didn’t have
that certain Corgi look.”

“Well, beautiful Belle couldn’t have been
more gracious to Star when I took her to meet everyone, and Star
immediately took to Jim. That was the hope — that their next dog would
kind of be Jim’s dog, as Belle was more or less Michael’s. When they agreed that Star was the dog for
them and I got ready to leave, I expected Star to try and go with
me, but nooooo … she followed Jim right into the house and I KNEW
she was home! Still didn’t keep me from crying though.”

“Today, Star is holding weight right around
36 pounds and goes on long daily walks with Michael and Belle. She gets
to make an occasional visit to Jim’s store, The Market Shop Gifts and
Accents in Salina, Kansas.”

“As we approach Star’s one year mark with her
not-so-new family, Corgi Connection is so thankful for the people who
open their hearts to these dogs that aren’t always perfect but have as
much love to give as any dog.”

I'm hoping a rescue Corgi comes up soon near me. Wish I could help the little girl in Kansas, but alas I'm too far away. Sigh!
