Although retired Cardigan Welsh Corgi Chief Leaf is a Master of Leisure Arts, this senior boy is making Daily Corgi news with the rollout of his Mom Jackie’s Chief-inspired DerpyDog Ceramics. (That’s right, friends. No rest for the not-so-weary Corgi).
What’s that? No idea what derpy means? Not sure what derpin’ is? You won’t find it in Webster’s or the Oxford English Dictionary, but “derp” (as applied to Corgis) describes a supremely goofy face our favorite dogs make without even TRYING. (Or the verb “to derp”. Same idea). The kind of unmistakable expression that captures the Corgi spirit at its exuberant best.
Happy Corgis derp spontaneously. Derp is a state of mind as much as anything else. Un-self-conscious Corgis, engaged deeply in their derpiness, are a beautiful sight. See above. (And if you’re still not convinced, check out The Daily Corgi’s Corgis Derpin’ Pinterest board).
So — what does all this derping have to do with anything anyway? And can this much fun really translate into making good things happen for Corgis in need? You BET it can! Right now, newly formed (and Chief Leaf-inspired) DerpyDog Ceramics is holding a Birthday Bucks Auction to benefit CorgiPals, the non-profit organization founded by Paige Davis to assist families of needy Corgis with their urgent veterinary bills.
DerpyDogs are porcelain clay Corgis with that special goofy look, hand-fashioned one at a time by Washington state artist Jackie Russo. No molds or models are used. As Corgis are individual, so are each of her original Derpy Corgis! (Full disclosure: I have one and its watchful grin charms everybody who visits. This is seriously cute stuff).
There are four “Derpys” up for auction right now on the DerpyDog Ceramics facebook page. To view the dogs and place your bid (via comment on photo album), follow these links:
The highest bidder on each dog at the completion of the auction on Friday, September 6th at 6 pm (PST) wins that Derpy Corgi! Shipping is complimentary to addresses in the 48 continental United States; winners are responsible for additional cost of postage.
Big thanks go out to Jackie for her time and talent in creating this fantastic event and sharing the spirit of Chief Leaf with the world. We all need a little derp in our day. (Or a lot). Please direct your questions to Jackie via the DerpyDog Ceramics page or via e-mail at derpydogceramics@earthlink.net.
DERP ON, Corgi People!
