Virginia M. writes from Montreal about her Pembroke Starbuck, named after the “kick-ass Viper pilot on Battlestar Galactica.”
Two and a half year-old Starbuck was born in New Hampshire but moved North of the border at the tender age of two months.
Her nickname is “Bean” because she’s “full of beans”.

Virginia says Starbuck is a “vivacious, funny, and sweet-tempered Corgi, who everyone in the building stops to pet and get kisses from. When she was a puppy, I would get stopped on the street on average five times every walk, and Starbuck regularly pulls me towards bus stops and outdoor terraces so she can get as many cuddles as possible.”
Her greatest bliss is cuddling with Nanny, who gives the world’s best belly rubs. Nanny is also a beloved partner in Starbuck’s many wild adventures.
Bean is a bon vivant among the local dogs too, and when she’s not giving squirrels or sticks the business, clocking miles in the wooded paths of Montreal Island, bounding down snowbanks, rolling in heaps of powder, making a snow angel, or furiously digging a tunnel to the other side of the world, she’s playing chase and wrestle with her park buddy Fox Terrier.
This feisty Pembroke never met a low-lying object she hasn’t tried to jump and was a star at Beginners Agility last Summer, after completing her Advanced Obedience course. Bean goes crazy for her football toy and goes through more than her share of Nylabones for problem chewers. “I’m considering investing in the company” laughs Virginia.
“She really keeps me on my toes!”
Starbuck’s rough and tumble but accident prone: “She’s already punctured her cornea, cracked a tooth, and swallowed a ball of fun tac!”
Like any Corgi worth her salt, Starbuck is a voracious eater, always nosing in for a whiff — hopefully a bite — of people food. Along with her Orijen kibbles, Starbucks loves broccoli, carrots, chicken, and stinky cheese.
Stinky cheese the most.
