Twinkie & Tootsie Roll

Pembrokes Twinkie and Tootsie Roll keep it Corgi with Mom Shannon and Dad Galen in northern Washington state.

Let’s pause just a moment to take all this adorableness in, shall we?

Corgi Rorschach test? I see cute, nothing but cute.

“Twinkie was our first Corgi, she was about four months old when we got her. I had previously raised Boston Terriers and had my six retired breeders (they were family first and still are). We likened Twinkie’s arrival to a kid growing up in an old folks home, no one wanted to play with her, all they wanted to do was sleep! About six months later we eneded up with two German Shepard pups and she had playmates!”

She was alpha dog to them and still is to this day, she takes them down by their noses!

Twinkie is the ultimate athlete and lives to play fetch.

In “Twink-ette” days.“Both the dogs love to have their “armpits” rubbed, it will relax them and get them to yawn in about fifteen seconds. All you have to do is point at them with both of your index fingers and wiggle them; the dogs drop to the floor and roll over sticking their front feet in the air waiting for their rubs.”

Twinkie was the lone Corgi in the house until she was about a year and a half old, at which point Tootsie Roll came on the scene.

Daughter Mary writes “This puppy was lovingly taken home from the pet store and I didn’t meet her until she was about a year old on a visit to my parents house. She feels more like a sibling than a pet! Tootsie Roll follows us around just to be with us and maybe get some lovin’.”

“This dog has a very happy-go-lucky, laid back, gentle and affectionate personality, and a real couch-potato side to her. To everybody who meets her she seems more like a little girl than a dog. Tootsie Roll has many different nicknames, but her real name was inspired by her colorings, which resemble that of the beloved Tootsie Roll candy.”

“Her favorite food is “see-food”, as she loves all food and will eat anything you give her.

“When my mother visited last year she was recovering from a hip replacement and was using a walker. Twinkie wanted her to play fetch but my mom couldn’t bend down to pick up the ball, so I taught her (in about five minutes) to put the ball on mom’s lap. Big mistake! Now you can’t sit anywhere (the toilet included) where she doesn’t show up with one of her twenty-five tennis balls, usually cold and slimy, to deposit it in your lap. Doesn’t feel so good on bare legs!”

“She is pretty good at throwing the ball at you from about two feet away. She’ll sometimes do the “sneak up”. You can be standing doing something, say drying your hair or washing the dishes when slowly and silently a ball rolls between your feet and stops, you look behind you and there she is with her head cocked looking at you with “the look”, shifting her eyes quickly to the ball and then back waiting for you to kick it for her. Tootsie Roll is very good about rolling the ball to you with her nose; as I’m lazy and won’t go get the ball, she has to bring it to me! She will also play volleyball with you by hitting the ball back to you with her front feet while standing on her hind legs”.

“She makes everybody laugh who comes onto her path and she is definitely the center of attention.”

Her main reason for leaving the puppy bed in the morning is to play outdoors with the other dogs and treasure hunt for whatever she can put in her mouth.

“Tootsie also has an affinity for chewing. She will chew whatever she can get her fat paws on and remarkably, can carry a ball or whatever fuzzy, cloth-like toy by the edge of her teeth by just a few threads. It’s hilarious to watch.”
