Paige’s Guest Post!

Hello TDC community! Paige here. Since Laurie is away at BlogPaws, she asked me to do a guest post to keep y’all entertained, so I thought I would talk about the one… okay TWO things I love the most (since they seem to be pretty popular around here too). My Corgis! You may know me as the Founder and CEO of CorgiPals (if not, go check it out!), but Dexter and Violet know me simply as Mama.

I’ve had a special love for Corgis since I saw Cowboy Bebop for the first time and got to see the Corgi data dog Ein in action. One scene in particular stole my heart. Here it is if you’d like to see it:

After I saw that I was totally hooked. I decided that since I am the first person in my family to go to college, maintain a 4.0 GPA, and graduate with high honors that I would get myself a Corgi puppy as a graduation present to myself, and I wasn’t going to let anyone stop me. So in May of 2010, I brought Dexter home… and my life instantly changed.

I didn’t sleep for about 5 weeks. Dexter and I slept on the couch together so he could wake me up when he had to go potty in the middle of the night without waking anyone else. He was a Mama’s boy from the start. Since the day I brought him home, he has always been at my side. He sits on the couch with me, lays next to my chair when I’m doing homework or doing work for CorgiPals, lays outside the bathroom door when I shower, naps with me… I can honestly say that he is my best friend. I was a dog (and cat) person before I got Dexter, but he is the first dog I ever raised by myself and it been the most rewarding experience of my life.

Actually, that’s not entirely true. The only thing more rewarding that raising one Corgi… is raising two! My boyfriend Phil and I decided last winter that we wanted Dexter to have a companion, so we once again went in search of a Corgi puppy. I knew I wanted a girl this time and in June of 2011 we got to bring home little Violet.

I wasn’t sure at first how Dexter would react to having another dog around. He was always very possessive and protective when it came to his Mama, but he was never once aggressive with another dog. This would, however, be his first real experience with a puppy since he left his litter mates. Here’s how they reacted to each other:

As you can see, he was very curious and excited, while Violet was pretty intimidated. That lasted for about… 15 seconds before things like this started to happen on a regular basis:

I can now say with complete confidence that Violet is in charge. She may still be smaller. She may be a girl. She may be the baby sister. But girl can kick some serious big brother ass! Observe:

I have to say, I was a little concerned at first because I had never had the pleasure (or stress) of introducing a new puppy to a resident dog. But Dexter has been the BEST big brother for Violet that I could have asked for. He’s never rough with her. He let’s her win fights over toys. He shares his chew bones and antlers. Best of all, when I let him out of his crate, he runs right over to hers and pumps his nub until I let her out too. They have really become great friends and siblings. They have even started a tradition together. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the “OMGMAMAISHOME” greeting:

They’ve really changed my life. I don’t know what I would do without my two best friends.
