Homeward Bound Pet Rescue, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3), organization based in Gilmer County, Georgia. Theirs is the only no-kill shelter in the entire county, and since August 29, 2000, they have rescued and placed an amazing 3,501 animals!
Their goal is to reduce the number of stray cats and dogs in the community through education programs, referral lists for neighboring shelters and rescue groups, and by offering cost-effective spay/neuter programs for those in need of financial assistance.
Homeward Bound needs short and long-term foster families, volunteers in many areas, and of course donations, all of which go directly to the animals’ care and help provide food, shelter and medical treatment.
Among the many animals they have successfully placed are these five all-stars, Corgis and Corgi mixes. Meet these happy endings now!
Misty: Corgi/Golden Retriever mix taken out of Gilmer County Animal Control. “Short with short legs and the perfect size”, Misty was going to be euthanized before Homeward Bound got their “paws” on her.
Angel: Corgi mix stray found on the highway. A family took her in for a bit but didn’t want to keep her. Twenty five pounds of energy and love!
Max: Corgi mix found as a stray and taken in by Homeward Bound’s vet’s office. A friendly boy who gets along well with other dogs and walks well on a leash. Obvious charm to spare.
Turbo: Corgi mix taken in as a stray (with a couple of other dogs) by a Homeward Bound Volunteer. Look at those delicious EARS!
Mallory: a young Corgi picked up by Animal Control. No one ever came looking for this lovely girl, and Homeward Bound took her out of a high kill shelter. Like the rest of the Corgi-fied little group, she got a forever home too.

Here with his own story of a happy ending, Sunshine Buddy is wonderfully well-spoken Corgi in southwest Florida. He recently wrote to The Daily Corgi about his rescue experience and subsequent adventures. His story is a great one, so I’ll let him tell it in his own words (as dictated to his Mom).
“My Mom Maggi, who is a volunteer and board member for Sunshine Corgi Rescue, rescued me from a shelter and took me home to foster. I batted my baby browns at her, and in about two hours (well, maybe it was four) she decided to adopt me. I was pretty wild, so we went to obedience school and worked really hard, and I became a Delta Society Pet Partner and a Reading Education Assistance Dog.”

“Every week for two years I visited a school with my pal Daisy, where the kids read to us and taught us new words, and we heard some really neat stories. Sadly, Daisy recently crossed the bridge and I’ve had to retire because of health problems, but I have some super memories and hope that I showed the kids that reading is really fun.”
Daisy was a rescue dog too, from a shelter on the East coast of Florida. She was a mixed breed, maybe some PBGV, and her person Ronnie says she was “the perfect Pet Partner and READing Paws girl.” I can vouch for that.
“We loved working with one another, and I know for sure the eight years she spent in her forever home were happy ones.”

“Along the way I’ve become a Canine Good Citizen.” (With all due respect — as if they needed to tell me I’m good. :-). “I am about nine years old — this is kind of an educated guess, since nobody is quite sure of when I was born.”
“I am also a writer and pen a column called “Buddy’s Chronicles,” for “Sunshine Themes,” the newsletter for the Sunshine Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club.”

I can't imagine not adopting after getting Charlie-bear. There are so many great dogs out there ready for adoption that have no bad history. It's like the commercials with the little dog. Sometimes things happen to the owners that a good dog can't help.
What an adorable bunch of dogs. So many great dogs out there to rescue and take home. I feel guilty stopping at two!!!
